Artificial Turf Basics
How long will artificial turf last?
You can expect your artificial turf to look great for upwards of 20 years. Our artificial turf products are warrantied for 16 years, including our installation labor. We offer this warranty as standard on every project, and it is substantially longer than the industry standard of 2 years.
Is there any maintenance involved?
Yes. Artificial turf is low-maintenance compared to natural grass; however, there are a few things you can do to keep it looking its best. Blow and/or spray off artificial turf with a leaf blower or water hose occasionally to free debris that might have stuck to the turf. We recommend adding simple green (they make a product that attaches to your water hose) for a deeper clean. Heavily trafficked areas will over time “lay flat” and require some grooming. You can use a bristled broom to fluff the turf or give us a shout for a professional grooming service.
Does artificial turf smell?
Artificial turf can develop an odor over time. This occurs most often in very small areas with several large pets. There is an easy solution of spraying the turf off with water or even better, Simple Green outdoor odor eliminator. Antimicrobial infills are recommended for areas with pets to promote cleanliness and reduce odor.
Do you need to clean it? How do you clean it?
Depending on its use, artificial turf may need occasional cleaning. You can simply pick solid waste up off the turf and spray any remaining residue with a garden hose.
Does artificial turf drain?
Yes, all of our Turf (except golf turf) is perforated to allow proper drainage. The turf will typically allow water to follow the same drainage path that existed in your yard beforehand. We also provide drainage solutions to address any existing problems before laying turf.
Artificial Turf Safety
Does artificial turf get hot?
Yes. Artificial turf will be warmer than natural grass on a hot summer day. We offer several variations of turf that are specially engineered to dissipate heat faster than standard artificial grass. In addition, cooling infills can be added to lower the temperature of your artificial turf. Shaded areas out of direct sunlight will stay cooler. For fast cooling, spraying the turf with water will lower the temperature significantly.
Is artificial turf it kid and pet friendly?
Yes! Our artificial turf is safe and effective for both children and pets. Most kids prefer our turf to natural grass as it’s not itchy or messy to play on. We can also install play padding under the turf for added protection. Our turf is perforated to allow for proper drainage, so animal urine will not damage or stain our artificial turf. The realistic look & feel of our turf makes it appealing for pets. We can also provide an antimicrobial infill to promote cleanliness and reduce odor.
Will artificial turf eliminate weeds?
Artificial turf will significantly reduce but not completely eliminate weeds. Natural grass is removed and several layers of decomposed granite are compacted on the area before turf is installed, making it near impossible for weeds to penetrate the surface. We also use a weed barrier underneath all non-putting green installations. Although rare, it is possible for weeds to sprout along the border or within the turf infill. We recommend using salt or concentrated vinegar to kill these occasional weeds.
Will artificial turf reduce the presence of bugs?
Artificial turf is a great pest deterrent as it does not retain water and organic matter. Most people notice a significant reduction in the presence of bugs including mosquitoes, water bugs, and ants.
Turf Cost and Installation
How much does artificial turf cost? What makes one turf more expensive than the other?
Artificial turf is priced by the square foot. Variations in the length and density of the material account for price differences in the product itself. It is important to note that even though many companies buy their artificial turf from the same manufacturers, some companies will relabel their products with different names to make it seem like a special proprietary product. We do not rebrand our artificial turf and are completely transparent about where our products come from. You can get a free, instant price estimate for your project using our calculator tool!
How is artificial turf installed?
Proper installation is essential. Improper installation can result in unsightly wrinkling and loose edges. All of our installations follow the same basic steps:
- Scrape the yard: We remove all grass, roots, and vegetation to ensure the area is smooth and free of debris.
- Install metal edging: Turf cannot have any “live edges.” Live edges are areas that do not border a hard surface such as concrete, masonry, or existing edging.
- We install 2-3” of base material, compacting it several times to ensure a flat, smooth surface. A slight grade is maintained to allow for proper drainage.
- Arrange and secure artificial turf: We arrange and cut the turf to fit your space. A combination of nails, seaming tape, glue, and staples can be used to secure the Turf.
- Infill: Once the turf is laid and secured, we spread a generous layer of infill over the Turf and groom it with a professional groomer.
- Clean-Up: Upon completion, our crews will clean up and remove all scraps and unused materials leaving your yard immaculate.
Will I notice lines/seams in the artificial turf?
Seams are areas where two pieces of turf are joined together. Our crews are highly experienced and have become extremely skilled at concealing seams in our installations. One would have to look very closely and intentionally to notice a seam. Additionally, we offer enhanced seam blending using special equipment.
How long does it take to install artificial turf?
Installations are highly dependent on the project size and details. On average, our installs take 1-3 days to complete.
Why choose Lone Star Turf?
How is Lone Star Turf different from other artificial turf companies?
Lone Star Turf rises above other installers in several ways.
- Quality over quantity: We take pride in our work and always place quality over quantity. Many artificial turf companies employ production-based models to complete as many projects as fast as possible. This often results in subpar installations that require fixing.
- Locally owned and operated: Lone Star Turf is owned by Patrick Walthall, a local Texan who grew up in Lakeway. Patrick is closely involved in every aspect of the company and does not run things from afar.
- Warranty: Lone Star Turf offers a 16-year warranty on labor. Most other companies only offer 1-3 year warranties.
- Multi-service: Lone Star Turf does more than just artificial turf! We also offer services including xeriscaping, rock beds, and pavers.
- Honesty is the name of our game: No rebranding or hidden fees. We operate with integrity and treat our customers with respect and honesty.
