Full Transcript: Expanding to Midland-Odessa

With the summer heat now in full swing, temperatures can severely damage natural grass lawns, turning them brown or even killing them altogether. That’s where companies like Lone Star Turf come in. Lone Star Turf is a premium artificial turf company that began in Austin and has expanded across Texas, most recently into the Midland-Odessa area. I spoke with owner Patrick Walthall about why he chose to grow the business in this region.

“Everything revolves around water in Texas—just like it does around oil. Those are the two major resources here. So, we wanted to offer something that could help people save money long-term while also conserving water,” said Walthall.

Lone Star Turf specializes in two core services:

  1. Xeriscaping

  2. Artificial turf installation

One common concern customers raise is that artificial turf can get hot in the summer.

“It does heat up—about as much as concrete does,” Patrick explains. “But we use a system embedded in the turf that can lower the ambient temperature by up to 50 degrees. It works using the moisture in the air or even just a quick spray from a garden hose.”

What really sets Lone Star Turf apart from other turf companies is its commitment to craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.

“We do things right the first time. We’re not going to be the cheapest, but we believe in doing quality work. And if we do make a mistake—we’re human—we stand behind it and come back to fix it.”

Although the company has been around for about six years, Walthall says his favorite part of the job is seeing the reactions from clients—and their pets.

“One of my favorite things is installing turf in a backyard that used to be dead grass, mud, or sand, and then watching a dog run out and start doing laps. They absolutely love it.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is artificial turf safe for pets?

Yes! In fact, many pet owners love it. Artificial turf is durable, easy to clean, and dogs enjoy running on it. As Patrick Walthall shared, dogs often celebrate their new yard by doing happy laps.

Does artificial turf get hot in the Texas sun?

It can get as hot as concrete, but Lone Star Turf uses a proprietary cooling system that can reduce the surface temperature by up to 50°F—using just air moisture or a light garden hose spray.

What is xeriscaping and how does it help?

Xeriscaping is a landscaping method that reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation. It’s ideal for Texas climates and helps conserve water while keeping your yard beautiful and low-maintenance.

How long does artificial turf last?

With proper installation and care, artificial turf can last 15–20 years. It’s built to withstand heavy use and extreme weather conditions—making it a smart investment for homeowners.

Is Lone Star Turf the cheapest option?

No—but that’s intentional. Lone Star Turf focuses on doing the job right the first time, using quality materials and workmanship. They also back their work and fix any mistakes, which ensures long-term value.
