Putting Greens in Texas: What They Cost and What to Expect

putting greens in Texas (Houston)

If you’re a golfer in Texas, you’ve probably stood in your backyard and had the same thought:

“What would it actually take to walk out there and hit reps whenever I want? No drive, no crowds, just me and my short game.”

We build putting greens in Texas every day at Lone Star Turf. And I’ll be honest: most homeowners start this process with the wrong expectations. It’s not their fault, as this industry is notoriously bad at explaining how this actually works.

So, let’s skip the sales pitch. Here is exactly what putting greens in Texas cost, why the prices vary, and what you’re actually getting yourself into.

What Do Putting Greens in Texas Cost?

In Texas, most high-quality putting greens cost between $15 to $30+ per square foot. While the average project across our entire business (lawns, dog runs, etc.) sits around ~$15,000, dedicated putting greens almost always trend higher.

Project TypeTypical Price RangeWhat You Get
The “Starter” Green$10,000 – $15,000Small footprint, basic flat surface, 2-3 cups.
The Enthusiast$15,000 – $30,000Custom undulations, fringe/apron, better speed control.
The Pro Setup$30,000+Large-scale, complex breaks, high-tier performance turf.

That’s a big range, and there’s a reason for that.

A smaller green might run you $10,000. A more dialed-in setup with slopes, multiple holes, and better turf can easily get into the $15,000 – $30,000+ range. And if you want something that feels closer to a real practice green, it can go beyond that.

The biggest mistake people make is trying to compare this to basic turf. A putting green isn’t just turf. It’s a performance surface.

Why is the Price So Variable?

This is where transparency matters, because a lot of artificial turf companies won’t explain this.

The cost really comes down to how detailed you want to get.

If you just want something simple to knock a few putts around on, that’s one thing. But most homeowners we work with want something that actually helps their game, and that changes everything.

Once you start adding slope, break, speed control, multiple cup locations… now you’re building something that has to perform, not just look good.

And then there’s the base.

This is the part nobody talks about, but it’s the most important piece of the entire project. If the base isn’t done right, the ball won’t roll right. It doesn’t matter how good the turf is on top.

Access to your yard, water movement, and layout — those all factor in too. Every yard is different, which is why pricing isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Are Putting Greens in Texas Actually Worth It? (The Brutal Truth)

This is usually the next question.

And the honest answer is: it depends on whether you’ll use it.

The people who get the most value out of it are the ones who actually care about their game. They’re out there a few times a week, sometimes every day, even if it’s just for 10–15 minutes.

What we see over and over again is that it becomes one of the most used parts of the house.

And when you look at it from a numbers standpoint, most clients “break even” in 3 to 5 years when you factor in saved water bills, lawn treatments, and those $40-a-pop bucket sessions at the range.

But honestly, most of our clients don’t do it for ROI on paper or for resale value (although it helps). They do it because they want a backyard they actually love to use.

What the Installation Process Looks Like

I always like to set expectations here, because this is where people get caught off guard.

It’s going to look like a construction site before it looks like Augusta.

We’re removing your existing lawn, grading everything out, building a proper base, and then installing the turf on top. It’s not a light project, but it moves fast.

Most installs are done in a couple of days.

And I’ll tell you one of my favorite moments. I had a client recently who refused to look at her backyard during the process because it looked so rough. When we finished and she walked out, she just started crying. Completely different space.

How Do Putting Greens in Texas Actually Play?

This is probably the most important part if you’re serious about golf.

No, it’s not going to feel exactly like a PGA Tour green. Anyone who tells you that is lying.

But if it’s done correctly, it can get really close in terms of roll and consistency.

We, at Lone Star Turf, design our greens so they actually function as practice surfaces. That means consistent ball roll, controllable speed, and real breaks you can read and play.

That’s the difference between something you use once in a while and something you actually improve on.

Let’s Address the “Big Three” Concerns

There are a few artificial turf questions we get on almost every call.

  • Heat: Yes, it gets hot. In the Texas summer, it’ll feel like walking on concrete. We don’t sugarcoat that. That said, we offer several variations of turf that are specially engineered to dissipate heat faster than standard artificial grass. In addition, cooling infills can be added to lower the temperature of your artificial turf. Shaded areas out of direct sunlight will stay cooler.
  • Maintenance: Artificial putting green turf is not “zero” maintenance, but it’s close. Keep the leaves off, rinse it occasionally, and you’re good.
  • Investment: Yes, installing a putting green is an upfront cost. If this is your “forever home,” or if you plan to be in it for 2+ years, it’s a no-brainer.

What Makes a Good Putting Green (and What Doesn’t)

This industry has a problem, and I’m just going to say it.

There’s a lack of transparency. A lot of artificial turf companies will show you pretty pictures, but they won’t explain what’s actually going into the build.

The difference between a great putting green and a bad one isn’t visible right away, but you’ll feel it fast.

If the base isn’t right, you’ll get bumps. If the install isn’t tight, seams show. If water movement is off, you’ll have issues after the first heavy rain.

We’ve been in construction long enough to know that doing it right the first time is the only thing that matters.

The Bottom Line

If you’re thinking about installing a putting green, here’s what I’d tell you:

It’s not the cheapest backyard upgrade you can do. But when it’s done right, it’s one of the best.

It turns your backyard into something you actually use. It saves you time. And if you’re into golf, it gives you an edge you just don’t get otherwise.

And more than anything, it’s something you’ll enjoy every single week.
